It should come as no surprise that Public Safety Minister Bill Blair continues to peddle lies about his May 1st gun ban by Order in Council – specifically:
“our prohibition will not impact the activities of law-abiding hunters or sport shooters.”
and
“These weapons have no legitimate civilian use, as they are designed to take as many lives as possible, as efficiently as possible.”
For the past 40 years the only legally permitted use for the AR-15 and other Restricted class rifles was target shooting. The only place these firearms could legally be discharged was at a government-approved shooting range.
This is the inconvenient fact our Minister of Public Safety conveniently ignores.
“The affected firearms are prohibited as they (1) have semi-automatic action with sustain rapid-fire capability (tactical/military design with large magazine capacity), (2) are of modern design, and (3) are present in large volumes in the Canadian market.”
It should also come as no surprise that Justice Minister David Lametti backs up Bill Blair’s lies with specious claims this is about keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals.
“The Government made amendments to the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited, Restricted or Non-Restricted (the Regulations) to classify certain assault-style firearms as prohibited to reduce gun violence, the threat they pose to public safety, as well as their prevalence on the market.”
Both Lametti and Blair peddle this garbage about “present in large volumes” and “their prevalence” in the Canadian market.
By this rationale the Liberal government could ban any firearm they please.
The AR-15 platform is the single most popular modern sporting rifle in North America.
The Ruger 10/22 is the single most popular .22 rifle in North America.
The RCMP already banned magazines for this beloved rifle and, given the two minister’s comments about popularity being one of three primary factors for banning guns, don’t be surprised if the Ruger 10/22 is banned next.
Buy-Back Program?
Once again Minister Blair peddled the line about a buy-back program.
“We have been clear that our prohibition will not impact the activities of law-abiding hunters or sport shooters. We have also signalled our intent to implement a buyback program that will provide fair compensation to affected owners”
To anyone who believes a buy-back program for guns prohibited under the May 1st Order in Council is in the offing, I would advise a word of caution.
A gun buy-back is nothing more than a promise from ministers of, arguably, the most corrupt government in Canadian history.
The government’s buy-back promise served a single purpose – to lower the volume on dissent and reduce opposition from gun owners.
Largely, it’s worked. Outside of a comparatively small band of committed firearm enthusiasts, the common sentiment among gun owners is, “Well, at least they’re going to pay for my gun when they steal it.”
I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.
This government is long on making promises and short on keeping them.
- Electoral reform
- Indigenous Reconciliation
- Balanced the Budget by 2019
- Restore Canada Post home delivery
- Make Access to Information open by default
- Ensure Access to Information laws apply to the Prime Minister’s office as well as all other government minister’s offices
- Change the House of Commons Standing Orders to end practice of using omnibus bills to hide items the government does not want scrutinized
- Create a Prime Minister’s Question Period
That’s just a partial list of their broken promises, and these are things the Liberals actually believed in prior to forming government.
Paying gun owners for their confiscated rifles? I guarantee you that’s at the bottom of this Liberal government’s priority list.

Christopher,
Great article. The biggest hoodwink in the nation is the gun buy back lie. Bill Blair and his company of bandits, are not buying your firearms; they are using borrowed or stolen funds from the government of Canada to pay cut rate amounts to steal legally owned firearms from a trusting population. Those government funds are our money, so, the gun buy back program is using our own money to buy our own property. These crooks need to be dragged from Parliament and treated to justice by the people of the nation.
Andrew.

As my father used to say “don’t step in that Charley it’s horse s#!t”. IF it does happen it will be at a very small % of the original cost and what about attachments like a AR sight that no one will want due to the specific application of the unit, this list could go on and entail 1/2 the cost of the FA. $250 mil will only cover the cost of the SKS riffles in the country. Next will be ammo! 556 (especially the infamous green tip steel core penetration bullet….), 762, slugs, lead the list will go until ALL are banned. There is more at stake here than loosing your property. Democracy has become the illusion of freedom.
Now is it me or do all the pictures of the minister have that smug, screw you look on his face?
Barry Snow says
The can only initiate a buy back plan but the implementation will never pass the house. They can not do this large money bill through an order in council. Maybe this is their plan to pass the trillion dollar debt on to the cons.

Everything you said in this article is true. Canadians had better wake up to the fact this communist government of ours is disarming the Citizens one model at at time with 1500 to start with. I gaurentee you coming to take my AR OR 10-22 will be a very bad day for all concerned and I know a great many others committed to the very same. A very wise friend of mine told me “ I’m 70 years old and I have no more mountains to climb so in the interest of making a difference it’s time to dig in and make a stand. GOD DAMN RIGHT. Coming to my house boys …. come in hot!!!

As a law abiding gun owner I cannot sell a firearm to anyone with a questionable ethical background .
This criminal Liberal government has demonstrated time after time that they have no regard for Canadian laws . Therefore I could not in good conscience sell my firearms to them .
A purchase can only be made when the seller actually wishes to sell an item and can come to a price agreement with a buyer . A forced sale at the buyers price , determined after the item is taken is called theft .
Arie Intveld says
So … Bill Blair is “promising” to use MY money (tax dollars) to “buy back” my property at a steeply discounted price. Well, Bill … you cannot buy back something which you never owned in the first place.
Regardless of where my firearms are found, or are moved to, within the CFP firearm category regime, my firearms are NOT for sale. And even if they were for sale, I will never sell to known criminals, mean drunks or socialists.
If you don’t own firearms, it’s because you count on others to do your dirty work. That’s fine. But don’t pretend you’re for peace and safety just because you outsource violence. — Thank you to all those who do the dirty work to keep us safe.
When the Government starts to disarm the populous, that’s precisely the time when every citizen should arm themselves. Venezuela is the most recent proof of this.
Andrey Piskunov says
It’s a lullaby to calm your frustration down and give you hope. Actually nobody is going to reimbruise 100% of the cost of your firearms, it will be either 50% of the value AT BEST or some capped fixed amount.
To believe them now would be ultimate insanity after how many times they lied to us.
