You wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. I know mine was. But then I wasn’t stupid enough to bring an automatic firearm to my wedding reception either. Seriously. A news report out of Ankara Turkey today blew me away. Okay, not literally, obviously, but it sure made me laugh and cry both at the same time.
As I said in a post the other day about “accidental discharges“, there just ain’t no such thing. Only someone who neglected to pay attention to what they were doing while they held a gun in their hand. This sad report is no exception.
Perhaps it’s time for Turkey to give up its tradition of shooting into the air at “special events”. After all, what goes up must come down, and bullets are no exception.

(AP) ANKARA, Turkey — The state-run news agency says a groom has killed his father and two aunts after opening fire into the air with an automatic weapon to celebrate his wedding. The Anatolia news agency says eight other relatives were injured during Sunday’s celebration in the southeastern province of Gaziantep. It says the groom lost control of the weapon and accidentally aimed at guests. He was arrested. It is tradition in Turkey to shoot into the air to celebrate weddings, circumcisions or sports victories. Turkey has failed to curb the practice despite imposing harsher punishments to cut down on stray bullet accidents. Police in Gaziantep were not available for comment.
