It’s shocking to anyone who follows the Ontario Police “lapdog”… I mean watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit. In their entire history they’ve almost never found a case of police misconduct that they couldn’t justify. Imagine my surprise while listening to the radio this morning when they report charges would be filed against one Toronto City Police constable.

It’s being reported Toronto Police Services Constable Babak Andalib-Goortani will be charged with assault with a weapon and will appear in court in late January to enter a plea.

Chief Bill Blair, ever vigilant to blame anyone but his own force, tried telling the world video evidence of the assault was tampered with. Wasn’t true, of course, but the facts didn’t stop Chief Blair from spouting off to every media outlet willing to listen.

Eventually Blair was forced to provide names of his men who were “likely” in the area at the time of the assault, leading to this charge today.

It’s a small victory in the largest abuse of Rights and Freedoms in Canadian history, but I guess we’ll have to take it.

Now, will Andalib-Goortani actually be convicted of anything, or will the Ontario crown prosecutor drop the charges on some made-up pretense?

We’ll be watching.
