The Big Lie and Canada’s Doomed Long Gun Registry

Published October 28, 2011 by Christopher di Armani Filed Under: Canada's Firearms Act

With all the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth over the impending demise of Canada’s failed (and useless and error-ridden) long gun registry, there is a “Big Lie” being spouted off by Windy Wendy Cukier and lying bureaucrats like Belleville Ontario Police Chief Cory McMullan.

I say lying because if anyone should know the truth about Canada’s “gun control” system it should be the chief of police of a major metropolitan city.

“If (the registry) is lost, my officers aren’t going to have all the information they currently have available to them to ensure safety. There is a loss of information and it could jeopardize public safety.”

And so enters “The Big Lie“.

If information is lost about how many guns are registered to someone, it jeopardizes that all-important factor in policing… “Officer Safety.”

Bullshit.

That is a flat-out lie aimed at protecting their little fiefdoms.  Bill C-19 does no such thing.

When police on the street query the Miramichi database they are generally asking one of two questions:

1. Does John Doe own firearms?, or

2. Is anyone living at this address a firearm owner?

Believe it or not, neither one of these questions require a gun registry for an answer.

These questions are answered by the other part of the system that nobody’s talking about in the rush to crow how “the sky is falling” and “the world as we know it is about to come to an end” or “women’s lives will be put at risk if we get rid of the long gun registry“.

These questions are answered by the portion of Canada’s “gun control” system that controls Licensing of firearm owners.

In Canada you CANNOT legally own a firearm of any kind unless you first pass the safety training exam and get a Possession and Acquisition License, or PAL.

By law you cannot even be issued a PAL unless you can pass an RCMP background check.

The hilarious (although incredibly deceitful) part of the statements like that of Belleville Police Chief Cory McMullan is that not having access to gun registration information doesn’t change a thing for officers on the street.

The Big Lie is that when they look for firearms at an address, they’re not looking at gun registrations at all.  They’re looking to see who, if anyone, has a firearms Possession and Acquisition License at the address in question.

Gun registrations are NOT tied to an address.  They’re tied to a Possession and Acquisition License Holder.

But why let a little thing like THE TRUTH enter into the debate?  That would take all the fun, not to mention the lies, out of the equation.

Political ideology, fear-mongering and a non-stop stream of misinformation directed at the public is far more effective for a PR campaign.

Seriously… Who cares if it’s all based on lies, just as long as we don’t kill off the Sacred Cow of Canadian Gun Politics: the failed and useless gun registry?

Yup, I was reading that 1995 bill, and it gave the police what looks like extraordinary powers of search and detention (without a warrant)

also very disturbing was a passage about the government can take away “all” guns without warning, yup, its there , I won’t go into the other passages that violate our rights.

these are the same guys that have “snipers” on top of the buildings in Ottawa scoping us “scary” Canadians.

Police Chiefs are “political” appointments, so they are Liberal stooges and “must” follow party lines.

Sad to see our police looking at normal citizens as criminals.

How do I send you money for a coffee???
