Don Klein is a friend of mine who is very active in Alberta, both on the firearms issue, and on the broader issue of our God-given rights and freedoms. He has written a letter to Prime Minister Harper asking him to keep his many past promises on the Firearms Act, and specifically the amendments it made to the Criminal Code of Canada, sections 91 and 92, which make the mere possession of a firearm without a “permission slip” (a firearms license) a crime punishable by jail time.
He also echos my call for the Prime Minister to keep his promise in killing the per-vote subsidy to political parties, which is a burden to us all.
Here’s Don’s letter:
Dear Prime Minister,
We, the millions of lawful traditional firearms owners, have done our part in giving you your majority. Many of us were once NDP and Liberal supporters, but because of the draconian gun laws supported by the oppressive Firearms Act, we took you at your word and voted to give you a majority in order for you to keep your promises to us.
To this end, I repeat it here:
“I was and still am in total agreement with the statement made in the House of Commons by former Reform Leader Preston Manning on June, 13, 1995: ‘Bill C-68, if passed into law, will not be a good law. It will be a bad law, a blight on the legislative record of the government, a law that fails the three great tests of constitutionality, of effectiveness and of democratic consent of the governed. What should be the fate of a bad law? It should be repealed …’ C-68 has proven to be a bad law and has created a bureaucratic nightmare for both gun owners and the government. As Leader of the Official Opposition I will use all the powers afforded to me as Leader and continue our party’s fight to repeal Bill C-68 and replace it with a firearms control system that is cost effective and respects the rights of Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly.”
We trust you will keep that most important promise. C-68 Firearms Act has proven to be not only very bad law, but useless in crime prevention, dangerous to police who are naive enough to rely on the corrupt data, crippling to lawful firearms owners, cost 1,000 times more than the Liberals said it would, is grossly incomplete and error-ridden, and has made life much easier for REAL criminals while attacking only those who by definition are law-abiding and have never been a problem to anyone.
On another subject, we fully support your promise to rid ourselves of the forced contributions to parties that go against all human rights.
Therefore we hope you will, as one of your main priorities, eliminate the contributions we are forced to give to political parties that are not compatible with a free and dynamic human society with rights and freedoms our forefathers fought and died for.
Thank you,
Don Klein
