“They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”
Careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. That’s the lesson rocker-turned-woke-government-lackey Neil Young discovered yesterday when Spotify called the aging singer’s bluff.
If you deliver an ultimatum to a service provider you better be sure you have the clout to make them blink.
Neil Young doesn’t have the clout – not with Spotify.
Australia’s Rita Panahi said it best on her January 27th show.
“Don’t you just love it when instant karma comes for a cancel culture hypocrite. There’s something delicious about aging rocker Neil Young trying to cancel Joe Rogan but ending up cancelling himself.”
Young earned himself a very public humiliation. He can’t compete with Joe Rogan or his $100 million Spotify-exclusive deal.
Oops!
It’s fascinating to see Spotify side with Joe Rogan, despite the massive exclusivity deal, in an age where simply asking questions of scientific experts is no longer considered science.
“We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon,” a Spotify spokesperson said.
It’s hard to believe the man who gave the world “Rockin’ In The Free World” is now “Shilling for the Man.”
Maybe it’s time Young re-reads the lyrics from his famous song.
“Rockin’ In The Free World”
Red, white and blue
People shufflin’ their feet
People sleepin’ in their shoes
But there’s a warnin’ sign
on the road ahead
There’s a lot of people sayin’
we’d be better off dead
Don’t feel like Satan,
but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
any way I can.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she’s gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she’s done to it
There’s one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool.Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world. We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand
We got department stores
and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes
for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people,
says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn,
got roads to drive.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.
Donald Sutherland says
Well said and good on Spotify for cancelling that hypocrite!
It is about time that someone took a stand against those overly woke, “personalities” – those who think that just because they have made it rich in the entertainment sector, they can jet around with the presumption that their opinions matter more than everyone else’s.
General I wish entertainers would go back to being entertainers and not acting like they know anything more than anyone else – running off at the mouth like Leonardo Dicaprio and others on topics they actually know nothing about. They should collectively takenote!
