Democracy is doomed globally but that’s an issue for another day. Today I’m only concerned with waking my fellow mere citizens in the Great White North from their slumber.
“I’m from the Government and I’m here to help.”
Those nine words doom Canadians because whenever government decides to “help us” the loss of individual freedom and prosperity is never far behind.
It’s a concept embodied in the Tytler Cycle, named for Scottish historian Alexander Fraser Tytler (1797 – 1813), who taught us all civilizations destroy themselves under the weight of their own selfishness.
A democracy is always temporary; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
A democracy will continue to exist until the time voters discover they can vote for generous gifts from the public treasury.
From that point, the majority always votes for the candidates who promises the most benefits from the public treasury.
The result is that every democracy finally collapses due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.
Today’s democracies are no exception. Our inevitable death spiral began at least two generations ago. COVID merely sped up the process faster than any of us thought possible just 12 short months ago.
As impossible as it seems today, one year ago Canada’s civilization floundered in between Complacency and Apathy, as shown in the graphic above. The Point of No Return was decades away, if not generations.
Then COVID-19 hit.
Starting in January 2020, leaders of governments worldwide saw an opportunity none of them believed possible just a few months earlier.
In the immortal words of Winston Churchill, these global leaders refused to allow this crisis to go to waste.
Now they’re using COVID fear as the rationale for pushing The Great Reset where these elitists will remake the economy in their own image.
God help us all if these folks get their way.
The Root of the Problem
Human beings hate making hard decisions. It’s in our DNA.
To avoid thinking for ourselves we abdicate our personal responsibility to the Nanny State – Mommy and Daddy Government – and let them make the hard decisions for us.
Two problems immediately ensue, of course.
First, Mommy and Daddy Government have no idea what they’re doing. They’re just moral busybodies who love telling everyone else what to do, how to think, and what to feel about, well, just about everything. They don’t actually have a clue what they’re doing.
Second, nobody likes being told what to do, so those few who are still willing and able to think for themselves rebel at the nonsense Mommy and Daddy Government demand.
The more those mere citizens who are still capable of rational thought rebel at the conflicting stupidity emanating from the Nanny State, the more Mommy and Daddy Government feel the need to bludgeon us into compliance with the force only a government can wield.
Government snitch lines are opened and promptly flooded with calls from snooping neighbours about the evil parents next door who allowed their children play with someone else’s children. In the privacy of their own back yard, no less.
Can you imagine the horror?
Little children from two separate families playing together?
Something Must Be Done!
Police arrive, “investigate” the “crime” and dutifully warn the offending parents about the massive fine they will receive “next time” if they Do Not Obey.
Mobs of cowardly moral busybodies love their government snitch lines. They love public shaming, stifling all “unapproved” opinions and the thunderous crackdown on “non-compliant” citizens and groups.
And social media. There’s nothing quite like a public shaming on social media.
The End is Nigh?
We are witnessing the systematic destruction of our country, our culture and our democracy.
Canada is poised to crash onto the reef of total Dependence on The Almighty State and an overwhelming majority of Canadians believe this is a great thing.
I don’t.
I do not believe shredding our Charter of Rights and Freedoms is necessary under any circumstances, let alone the ones we find ourselves in today.
If we hadn’t been fed a steady diet of fear for 10 months and counting, people might be able to think rationally about what’s going on. But we were fed that 24×7 smorgasbord of fear by politicians and every mainstream media outlet in the country for nine months.
The ability to think rationally left us a long time ago.
The government declared it a crime to visit a friend in their home or invite a friend over to yours.
Nobody complains. At least not out loud for fear of a visit from the COVID Police.
The government now dictates which holidays it will permit and which it will ban.
Nobody complains. At least not out loud for fear of a visit from the COVID Police.
The government declared it a crime to attend a religious worship service.
Nobody complains, because they were the ones who called the COVID Police on those nasty pastors and their non-complliant congregants.
Those who believe public worship is essential to their faith and their mental health are punished. They are harassed, publicly shamed and threatened with death.
The moral mob cheers. From a cowardly distance, of course.
The Charter
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms still exists.
It was not shredded by COVID or quietly suspended by the insipid public busybodies who threaten us daily from our television and smartphone screens.
As is always the case when tyranny rears its ugly face, a few brave souls backed into a corner must bear the burden of saving the masses too stupid or too cowardly to save themselves.
Thus it has ever been.
Thus it will be again.
Do you remember Pastor Martin Niemöller?
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
When the COVID Police come for you, will there be anyone left to speak for you?
C.H.Evers says
I agree with you completely!
Judy says
I’m so grateful to my parents and grandparents that told me: “The Government is NOT your friend.” Especially my Dad. Who taught me to question everything. If it doesn’t feel right, or sound right, listen to your intuition, and your gut feeling.
Glad I am old and don’t have to witness too much more of this insanity.
Steve Barragan says
Excellent article. Will be passing this one around. Way too many sheeple in Canada drinking the milk from the government’s teat.
Barry Jackson says
We thinking Canadians are surrounded by libtards who have been indoctrinated by the corrupt corporate media. Thank you for your voice of sanity.
Christopher di Armani says
You’re welcome, Barry. Hopefully more will listen… and act.
GerryK. says
Hi Christopher, an excellent article and unfortunately so true it’s painful. We are experiencing disarmament, not just of firearms but of our freedom and liberty.
“The intent is to destroy the sovereignty of the individual, and to eliminate the consent of the governed” author unknown.
Until enough are angered sufficiently to begin pushing back, and to stand up regardless of the consequences, this will only get worse. When the government of the day finds it is hard to keep their promises, they default to lies and bloviating to cover up the reality that they are useless and inept. Their evil is further hidden by the grossly biased, bought and paid for media, that also lies and distorts the truth to suit the governments agenda.
You know, it has occurred to me that it would not be a surprise to find our recent elections were stolen by fraud and manipulation. That is the only rational explanation I have to comprehend how the citizenry of Canada supposedly voted them back in to power after the first four years of bumbling incompetency.
Now Freeland is starting to suggest they may steal the “excess” savings in our bank accounts, to help reduce the nations debt, that they caused, and yet, it seems the tipping point still has not been breached. Unbelievable!
Christopher di Armani says
I don’t think there was any need to “steal” the last Canadian election, Gerry. Andrew Scheer’s bumbling and the total ineptness of his communications team did the Liberals’ job for them.
Will the next time be different? While I would hope so, I’m not so naive as to believe much has changed in the CPC other than the name of the guy at the top of the ticket.

Found an interesting report I think was released yesterday about the New Zealand Mosque Shooter. Seems he slipped thru a number of cracks in the system of New Zealand laws that are similar to ours, Most curious was the fact he was able to list two references [ known over there as Referees] that were Only online acquaintances from his White Supremist Chat groups and/or Game groups.
Additionally the government’s security branch only checked for Terrorist/Radical elements but not white supremacists groups. Plus this guy didn’t work much if at all and got his money from an inheritance and travelled to many countries, some questionable and these many factors should have raised govt. eyebrows when he got his license and guns. He wasn’t even a citizen of N.Z. [ he is australian ]

Off the track here a bit… I saw a recent Gordon Ramsay show of foreign food/eating experiences and he was Hunting feral wild goats in N.Z. and it appeared that his rifle was equipped with a long-ass suppressor.
I wonder if that Prime Minister will ban those too ?… often wish we had that accessory item here in Canada.
42 States allow them and for hunting too, but there is a onerous legal process involved.
From what I’ve been reading about the americans lately, they too seem to have to continually Stand On Guard for their freedoms, there are always elements determined to strip there their rights. The trend is becoming a global problem.
Thanks for letting me post these comments Chris.
Christopher di Armani says
My pleasure, Peter.
Mr. Casull says
You pose a rhetorical question, Mr. di Armani. Of course Canada’s democracy is doomed, just like it’s doomed across all of the western ‘democracies’. It’s doomed because the majority of the people in these nations have not merely forgotten, but more precisely, have never understood the lessons taught by very recent history. How could they, with our leftist-infiltrated public ‘education’ [indoctrination]] systems? It’s been widely assumed over the past thirty years that the West ‘won’ the cold war. Did we really? I contend that the West actually lost the cold war, and rather decisively, given that more than half of the people in the West have a favourable view of socialism. Khrushchev once famously remarked while visiting the USA that communism would ultimately triumph in America due to subversion from within. So while America may have bankrupted the Soviet Union, it sure looks to me like the Soviets scored a fatal blow before their regime faded into history.
Here’s a little rhyme to bear in mind…
When the sheep and the cattle go ‘Bah’—‘Moo-Moo’,
In response to exaggerated Asian Flu,
You know that freedom’s days are few.
They do as they’re told by the ones in charge—
Glad to comply with them, by and large.
What a shame that the herbivores are easy marks,
Lead to confinement by the pin-striped sharks.
It’s now far too late to throw the lockdown yoke—
Fate’s been determined for these common folk.
I’ll close by wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas,
and offer an updated version of this traditional Holiday favourite
We wish you some social distance,
We wish you some social distance,
We wish you some social distance
And a vaccine next year.
With lockdowns galore,
And who knows what more,
We wish you some social distance,
And a vaccine next year.
Christopher di Armani says
Great points on communism losing the battle but winning the war, Mr. Casull. And an even more excellent poem. Thank you for sharing that and your rewrite of the traditional Christmas wish!
Arie Intveld says
Aces, Mr Casull! That’s a pretty nice, tight group you’re printing on target with your critically aimed words. You are absolutely on point when you stated that half of Westerners are yearning for socialism. I’ll add that the other half of Westerners don’t know whether to take a watch or wind their shyte.
And a Merry (socially distanced) Christmas to you as well, Mr. Casull.
Arie Intveld says
Hard times create strong men,
Strong men create easy times,
Easy times create weak men,
Weak men create hard times.
Repeated throughout history … over and over and over. This is the tragic record of humankind.
We are currently at the last statement.
We must mobilize to the first statement … and then let all hell break loose.
Christopher di Armani says
Amen, Arie!
Gerald Porter says
In keeping with Arie Intveld’s poetic contribution, let me add this:
Democracy enables Entitlement. Entitlement enables Enfeeblement. Enfeeblement enables Tyranny.
As for your opening question: ‘Is Canada’s Democracy Doomed?’, let me say this: “Canada is the only nation on the planet in which an Anglophone majority is subservient to a Francophone minority.”
Our democracy is of little value because we Anglos lack the strength of character to take advantage of it.
Canada’s Francophones have been able to take command of Canada with the greatest of ease. What the French lost at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, they regained, in spades, when we elected Pierre Trudeau as our Prime Minister.
Canadians, particularly Ontarians, wilted, and gave Trudeau carte blanche to do as he pleased. What pleased him most was Anglo-Canada’s utter lack of gumption.
