CSSA 2016 Annual General Meeting Update

The following is information on the voting procedures and ballots.

Voting and Proxy Procedures – To ensure that all members have an opportunity to vote at the AGM, we use the following procedures in relation to ballots and proxies. Your ballot/proxy will be mailed to you or you may download it from our website: http://cssa-cila.org/wp-content-cssa/uploads/2016/04/AGM-Ballot-2016.docx.

You may send in your ballot by mail, fax or email. It also asks whether you will assign your proxy to the Chair of the meeting (usually the President) or to someone else who will be in attendance. It also gives you the option of instructing your proxy to vote in a specific manner if you wish.

Important Note – All ballot/proxy forms must be received at the CSSA office by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016 to be valid. No proxies will be accepted after that date (including at the AGM meeting). These may be mailed into the office. Faxes and scans of the original document will also be accepted.

Changes to the CSSA Constitution and By-Laws: There are no changes to the CSSA Constitution or By-Laws.

Board of Directors: On the ballot you will find a slate of four board candidates recommended by the Nomination Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. Each board member serves for a three year period.

Board of Directors – On the ballot you will find a list of four Board candidates recommended by the Nomination Committee and approved by the Board of Directors. Following is information on each of the candidates. Please note that the “*” indicates a current Board Member.

Stephen Torino, C.A. (Quebec) — Steve Torino is a licensed firearms retailer, wholesaler, dealer and importer for all classes of firearms as well as being a licensed gunsmith and firearms appraiser. He is a Chartered Accountant by profession, whose expertise ranges from legislative interpretation to computer programs and other relevant matters, with knowledge and experience in numerous major multi-national industries.

Steve has extensive knowledge of past and current Canadian firearms legislation and regulations, along with a good grounding in the legislation of other Commonwealth countries. This knowledge includes all major firearm types and actions produced, ammunition and reloading, ballistics and sound testing. He has done firearms-related work for the RCMP, Sûreté du Quebec, CFO, etc., and is an approved Verifier for the Canadian Firearms Registry.

Steve was Chair of the Justice Minister’s User Advisory Group on Firearms and a founding member of the Quebec Provincial Firearms Advisory Group to the CFO. Steve has served on the Canadian delegation to the United Nations for several Small Arms and Light Weapons Conferences and was the co-chair of the Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee.

A competitive target shooter in all classes of firearms since 1970, Steve attended 25 consecutive World Amateur Trapshooting Championships, winning numerous trophies at these and other international competitions. He was co-owner, director and president of a Montreal shooting range, and he has also held numerous executive positions in provincial, national and international trapshooting associations, including the Amateur Trapshooting Association (USA). He is past-president of the Semi-Automatic Firearms Collectors of Quebec.

Stephen is currently President of the CSSA and has served on the Board of Directors for eleven years.

Diane Town (Ontario) – Diane Town, a Registered Practical Nurse, has been involved in the shooting sports for the last 30 years as a hunter, competitive trap shooter (ATA) and occasional rifle and pistol shooter. She was formerly the Regional Director for Southwestern Ontario. Diane is very interested in women’s issues as they relate to shooting and was instrumental in developing a Women’s Day Program, which encourages women to become active in the shooting sports.

As the former Vice-President and President of the Kent Cloverleaf Conservation Club, Diane was the first woman to hold either of these positions and as well as the first woman to become a member of the Dresden Sportsmen’s Club competitive team.

Diane is presently the CSSA Treasurer and has served on the Board for twelve years.

Terry Green (British Columbia) – Terry has recently retired from a career which comprised of a number of occupations from owning and operating a trucking company in B.C., to holding a variety of management positions most of which involved working with and interpreting and/or challenging government regulations at the municipal, provincial and national level. Since he was old enough to hold a gun, Terry has enjoyed and been active in recreational shooting including hunting, trap, skeet, sporting clay, handgun and rifle, and he always has room for just one more firearm.

The implementation of Bill C-17 was the spark that ignited a desire to fight for his rights as a Canadian gun owner, and Terry has been involved in this fight ever since. He has been a member and/or on the executive of pro-gun groups ranging from small local clubs to provincial and national organizations for all of his adult life, and he is a six-year CSSA Director.

Terry is a very familiar face in western Canada and has concentrated on expanding the visibility and increasing the name recognition of the CSSA by promoting our organization at gun shows in our four western provinces. The results of his Herculean efforts over the last several years have been very encouraging. Terry’s vast experience was instrumental in the revamping of the CSSA’s administrative capabilities.

In addition to his involvement in the shooting sports, Terry is very active in the political process and for a number of years has contributed to, worked and campaigned for and/or been on the executive of a number of right-of-center political parties at the municipal, provincial and national level.

Garry Breitkreuz (Saskatchewan) – “They can lie louder, but I can tell the truth longer.” Those famous words were spoken in the House of Commons by Garry Breitkreuz during his tenure as the Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville, Saskatchewan. For over 20 years, Mr. Breitkreuz served in Parliament as the resident expert on firearm issues and was honoured and acclaimed around the globe for his diligent work on behalf of lawful firearm owners. Respected by politicians of all stripes, Garry Breitkreuz was known by his House colleagues as a calm and reasonable man who told the truth and followed his convictions.

Mr. Breitkreuz recently retired from the federal political scene to spend more time with his beloved family after so many years serving Canadians. But his passion for firearm owners and their struggle to retain their rights and respect within Canadian society is something in which he truly believes.

Mr. Breitkreuz graciously accepted a position as an interim Director on the CSSA’s Board of Directors and was temporarily appointed to that position in late 2015. His inclusion on the ballot is to permit CSSA members to ratify Garry’s position as an elected CSSA Director.
